EDICION 2025

JUAN ATKINS

Juan Atkins invented and spearheaded a technological electronic dance music revolution in the
early ’80s, coining the term “techno” to describe its sound, and pioneering the genre with his
band Cybotron. Inspired by Alvin Toffler’s sci-fi novels, he blended Parliament Funkadelic’s
“funk” with Kraftwerk’s “electronics” and synth-pop to create a visionary sound that transcended
norms. Tracks like «Clear» marked techno’s introduction, later sampled by Missy Elliot in her
track “Lose Control”. Founding Metroplex Records, Atkins further shaped the techno sound.
Timeless classics like “Techno City”, “No UFO’s”, “Starlight” and “The Chase” continue to be
well-received by current generations. Collaborations with Berlin’s Moritz von Oswald, the creator
of the sub-genre dub techno, resulted in conceptual albums like «Borderland» and «Transport”.
The 2018 Cybotron revival and holographic show with Lorenz von Oswald showcased Atkins’
lasting impact. The “History of Techno” is Atkins’ current conceptual DJ performance, aimed at
showcasing the most significant tracks to techno’s birth and evolution over the last 44 years,
highlighting its global cultural significance.
Techno has sparked a global cultural movement as communal electronic dance music, playing a
key role in promoting values of tolerance, diversity, inclusiveness, community, social awareness,
innovation, and togetherness in societies across the globe for the last 44 years.
In black American culture, Atkins’ renowned contributions to entrepreneurship include his
courage to start the first independent record label in Detroit, as well as his entrepreneurial spirit
in personally mentoring future pioneers such as May and Saunderson in music production and
DJing. Later, he collaborated on the Music Institute, a venue and production house instrumental
in nurturing future techno music talent.
In 2024, Juan Atkins transitioned into the tech industry as a tech entrepreneur, co-founding the
app Techno Techyes, also known as “Techyes.” Techyes integrates the techno community’s
culture and values into the tech sector, aiding entrepreneurs and businesses in enhancing their
remote and hybrid company culture, while creating economic growth opportunities for local
hospitality businesses. In March 2024, Atkins collaborated with the Michigan Economic
Development Corporation at SXSW in Austin, showcasing Michigan’s culture, tech career and
entrepreneurial prospects. Michigan fosters an environment conducive to entrepreneurial
success by offering resources and assistance for scaling tech jobs, companies, and professional
endeavors. Atkins viewed this partnership as a valuable mentorship opportunity for his Techyes
app and aimed to share his experiences with the broader techno and entrepreneurial
communities as a guide for industry and entrepreneurial ventures. Inspired by futurism and
technology, Atkins, a pioneer in techno music, now seeks to instill techno values within the tech
industry. His involvement in Michigan’s innovation landscape has led him to participate in the
“You Can in Michigan” campaign at SXSW.
In April 2024, Atkins makes his debut appearance at the International Music Summit (IMS) in
Ibiza, presenting “The Future is Techno, The Future is Now” to underscore the significant role
that science fiction, technology, and futurism have played in techno’s invention and ongoing
development. Atkins aims to propel the futurist movement in music, technology, and the tech
industry while supporting fellow artists and entrepreneurs who are dedicated to advancing
various aspects of music and technology.

«Tension» is the audiovisual performance project by VANH & Brenda Sayuri.Duration: 60’The conceptual line of this force will guide the spectators in an immersive, sonorous and forceful performance. The sound emitted by the oscillators and modulators will recreate an environment of opposing forces, where the visuals subjected to physics will react to the frequencies in real time. The attraction of particles, strings, acceleration of pixels, will give us unique visuals, with a lot of speed and balance.
